What Do You Do When Your Heart Is Overwhelmed?Psalms 61:1-3 -- “Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.” David uses the word “overwhelmed” seven times in his musical writings of the Psalms. It is a word that means to cover over, or to envelop. It can mean to grow weak and feeble. It pictures the heart that is drawn up and weak. David had his share of reasons for his heart to be overwhelmed. There was Saul’s jealousy and relentless pursuit of David’s life. There was his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah to attempt to cover it up. Until it is dealt with and forgiven by God, sin can and will always cause one’s heart to be overwhelmed. Then there was the death of the child that was conceived in the adultery. Sin and death is always overwhelming. Sin has consequences and David’s sin was going to bring a great consequence in his family. What about his son Amnon’s sin with his daughter Tamar? Also, his son Absalom’s rebellion and death during that rebellion, is painful for anyone to read. Family problems and especially the waywardness of one’s children can leave any parent overwhelmed. Then there was his trusted friend and counselor Ahithophel’s betrayal. The daily responsibilities of being king could bring the heart to be overwhelmed. Our text shows us where David went and where we can go when we become overwhelmed. We run to God in prayer! In prayer David asked God to lead him “to the rock that is higher than I”. That Rock in David’s life is the same Rock we have in our life; Jesus! He is our shelter and strong tower from our enemies. Feeling overwhelmed today? Run to God in prayer and let Him lead you to the Rock of shelter and safety!
