Attention to All Those Flaunting This Coin as Proof of a "Stolen Land" Narrative: Let's Unpack Some History, Shall We? The word "Palestine" finds its roots in Philistia, a region inhabited by the Philistines. In the 2nd century the Romans coined "Syria Palaestina" for the southern part of Syria, and it found its way into Arabic, sticking around since the early Islamic era.The Romans, after overpowering the Jewish in 70 CE, officially named the country "Palestine" on coins, marking it as the territory of the Jews.During biblical times, the land wasn't called Palestine, so making phrases like "Jesus was a Palestinian Jew" is preposterous. The name change happened much later! It was not until the 1960’s that Arabs began to use the term to mark the Arabs of the former British Mandate! And still use it until as they want to disassociate the Jewish people from their homeland, just as in Roman times. So just to clarify the facts: Jews have had a presence in the region now known as Israel for more than 3,000 years. The Arabs arrived around 1,400 years ago. As for the Palestinians, their national identity began gaining recognition only after the 1960s.
