An example of a navigational map of the late 1600s. I found it interesting there are shaded areas in what we now call the "Bermuda Triangle," but even when enlarged, I can't make out what the words inside the shaded area say. It may be a navigational warning or a warning against pirates. Hard to tell. Maybe this is why navigators had large hand held magnifying glasses they would slide on the tables over the maps as they plotted their courses? Hard to say. Compared to the GPS systems and satellite photos of today, the maps back then can't compare but for sailors then it was all they had.
