Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola cries about seeing the Vierkleur Flag at the Groblersdal rally organised by the BittereindersIn a statement released by the minister yesterday, he condemns the use of the Vierkleur (also known as the Transvaal flag) by protestors as it "is deeply troubling" and a "symbol that represents colonisation and aparthied. [sic]"He then goes on to quote a court ruling from 2019 that banned the gratuitous display of the so-called "Apartheid flag" used by the South African government between 1928 and 1994. This is, of course, a different flag representing a different state. The Vierkleur has been used over various time periods as a representation of the Boers and later the Transvaal region and the South African Republic (ZAR) before annexation by the British Empire in 1902.Lamola goes on to say that people who brandish the Vierkleur are "rejecting the core values of democracy, equality, and the Constitution."
