This passage is said by Jesus right before he raises Lazarus from the dead. This was the last miracle performed in John's Gospel, arguably the greatest miracle as well. I believe that this miracle served a greater purpose than simply impressing the crowds that saw Lazarus raised from the dead. It gave credence to everything that Jesus claimed up to that point. It gave his followers the hope and belief that Jesus truly was the life and that if and when he died, he could be reborn. More importantly, if he could raise Lazarus and himself from the dead because of their belief in him, he could raise ANYONE. This is the most important message that I take from this passage.
If Jesus died and remained dead, how could he claim to be the resurrection and the life? He couldn't and his followers would realize this. He could be a great teacher, but the covenant that God had with humanity would not be fulfilled. It requires all sections to come true in order for our sins to be forgiven. As Lazarus resurrection proved, if we believe in Christ we can be literally resurrected. Although we will not have the same opportunity as Lazarus, we too will be resurrected through our faith.
This is the fundamental tenet of Christianity. We do not win God' favor through rituals and attending church. We do so through our faith. "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
The sting of death is gone. Trust in the Lord, know that Jesus lived, died, and was resurrected for us. Through our faith in him, we too shall live again. Though we are dead, yet shall we live. Thanks be to God!
