This week in 1995, KNAC closed its doors after bidding us all farewell with an emotional sign-off. Based in Long Beach for nearly a decade, the radio station developed a huge following among heavy metal fans across the country & was responsible for helping launch the careers of countless bands during the 80s and 90s. Unfortunately, due to its poor signal strength and ever-declining market share, the station's owners (Keymarket Broadcasting) decided to throw in the towel and sell it off. On its final day, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich dropped by the studio to show their support as the DJ signed off with Metallica's "Fade To Black." Then, at 1:59 pm on February 15th, KNAC went off the air with a short farewell message from general manager Gary Price: "This is KNAC Long Beach-Los Angeles. KNAC's Pure Rock is now signing off. Thanks for your support. You have been the greatest." Seconds later, 105.5 began playing fucking Tejano music under the call letters KBUE (Que Buena). 🤘
