A Pentagon report has concluded that the naval variant of the Bell-Boeing V-22 tiltrotor is unsuitable for the mission of resupplying aircraft carriers at sea.
In its 2023 annual report, the office of the Director for Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) said the CMV-22 Osprey is “not operationally suitable” for the carrier-resupply mission. This office is responsible for the evaluation of the effectiveness of all the Penagon's weapons systems.
The report cites the CMV-22 being prone to “failures of many subsystems”, with the tiltrotor’s ice protection system accounting for 44% of operational failures.
With V-22s grounded following the latest crash with the type, it is as yet unknown what repercussions this report will have on the aircraft's career, and whether the life of the C-2 Greyhound will thus be extended.
