I wish I was still teaching Social Studies. I would engrain this chart into every student's mind.
The Blue indicates the power of the government.
The Red indicates the power of the people.
As you can see, Democracy is in the exact middle. In a democracy anything can be decided by a vote and by a simple one vote majority an issue can be decided. We are not a Democracy, no matter how many times the Democrats use that term in the news. We are a Republic where it takes more than a single vote. We try to protect the rights of the minority. That is why our Forefathers met immediately and wrote the Bill of Rights. These rights cannot be denied by a single vote, but they can be regulated for certain purposes. For example, Free Speech and Free Press. It is not absolute. If what you say hurts someone or you write a falsehood, you can be prosecuted under slander and libel laws. Freedom of speech and the press does not mean you get to lie.
Our Forefathers also included the Electoral College to balance the "big state-little state" inequalities. Likewise, each state is assigned a representative based on population in the House, but in the Senate each state gets 2 votes. Remember your history and how the Congress was allowing the entry of new states, but they tried to keep the balance between free and slave states? Not the best idea, but it kept the peace and the country grew. We have always been concerned about equality between states.
These are just a few things included in the concept of American Republicanism.
Article 4, Section 4 states that the Congress shall present a republican form of government to the States. Not democracy, socialism, communism, nor any form of kingdomship or dictatorship. In my opinion, any member of Congress like Sanders, AOC, or Oman should be sanctioned and removed from government. Every member of Congress should be working within the bounds of republicanism.
More to come . . .
