Commitment is a major part of friendship. You cannot have a meaningful, fruitful friendship with anybody if there is no commitment. Friendships is more than just talking about things you share in common or the laughter. There is more to friendships than going out on fun trips. These things may be good for building memories, but they do not keep the bond intact. If you are the type of friend who is only around when the going is good, and you abandon your friends when challenges arrive then it means that you aren’t a very good friend.Friendship is a bond between two people who have agreed to guide each other, support each other, and correct each other where necessary. It is a bond between two people with mutual respect for each other. A good friendship is capable of making one feel fulfilled, appreciated and loved. This is why Proverbs 27:9 describes friendship as sweet as the effect that ointment and perfume can have one one’s heart. Friendship can be a source of comfort, wisdom, and refreshing. You are meant to be delighted at the thought of interacting with the people you consider friends.Friendship is also about weathering the tough and challenging times. When the going gets tough and things don’t seem to be working in your favor, you need a friend who can encourage you and pray with you. Sometimes our minds become clouded by the pressure and we forget about what we need to do. Good friends will be your extra pair of eyes and ears, ready to keep you updated on the things you need to do. Godly friends will always remind you to keep focused on God and His faithfulness.When your friends are going through challenging times, you need to be that friend to them too. You do not leave them to face their problems on your own; you stand with them and give them the support, comfort, and encouragement they need.Commitment in friendship means that you are there for your friends in all times. You put in effort to make the friendship work. Don’t just look for your friends when you are in need and abandon them when everything is fine again. That is a selfish way to live.The love in your heart should compel you to be a committed friend at all times – not when it suits you.
