"Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you KEEP IT A SECRET! Why didn't you tell the world, eh!?" - Dr. Strangelove
Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was released in theaters 60 years ago today.
The dark comedy satirizes a number of aspects of the Cold War, from nuclear war planning to "Mine-shaft gaps". Reportedly, director Stanley Kubrick became fascinated about nuclear conflict in the early 1960s and intended the film to be a serious drama. As time progressed however, Kubrick embraced absurdities found in the nuclear arms race.
The film stars Peter Sellers in three roles, George C. Scott as General Buck Tugidson, Sterling Hayden as General Jack D. Ripper (Hayden was ironically a brief member of the Communist Party in 1946), Slim Pickens as Major T.J. "King" Kong, and James Earl Jones as Lieutenant Lothar Zogg in his film debut.
Strangelove generally ranks high for top films of the 20th century, particularly for comedies. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 1989.
