"You Need a Church"There are those who say “I don’t have to go to church to worship God.” And our reply is—“No one said you did!”Of course you can worship God in the great out-of-doors. You can worship God while fleeing from an enemy like David did, or while sitting in the belly of great fish like Jonah, or while standing on top of Mt Moriah with your son whom you just about sacrificed like Abraham did, or while sitting in jail like Paul and Silas did, or you have just received word that you’re going to have a baby after all, like Hannah did. Spurgeon said “all places are places of worship to a Christian.”On the other hand, think of this—without a church family you don’t get the same encouragement as you do when you’re one of many all praising the same God together. And, worship is a whole lot more exciting for me when I can’t hear myself, and most of us are in the same boat. Singing in the car or the shower just doesn’t have the same emotive effect as a whole congregation. Plus, the sermons I hear at church are far more convicting and much deeper than the ones I preach to myself in the woods. I tend to take it easy whereas the guy in the pulpit doesn’t pull any punches.Ultimately, however, it’s this. We are called to love and serve one another. How in the world do you do that out on the bayou in a fishing boat by yourself…on a Sunday morning.I’m most anxious for Sunday to roll around, and I can worship God…with you.
