HEAD AND HEART
Very few believers ever find the right balance between head and heart, between logic and emotion. Most just follow their natural tendencies and end up wherever their personalities take them.
The heady believer will have a tendency to overthink things and maybe even become puffed up with knowledge (I Cor. 8:1). People like this often become combative in nature and have a tough time making and keeping good friends. They must have the last word and win every argument.
Then there's the hearty believer who functions mostly from emotion. Such people aren't very bookish, and they usually aren't very deep doctrinally. When they weigh-in on a doctrinal issue, they usually do so with an emotional response. A traditional southern camp meeting is a good place to witness this in preaching: "If you ain't borned-agin from a King James Bible, then you ain't saved, praise God!" He's never really thought that through; he only FELT it through while feeling like he was thinking.
Those are the two extremes, and everyone else is somewhere in the middle. The well balanced believer is the man or woman who has studied, prayed, grown in grace and labored in the Lord while learning by experience when and how to administer the proper mix of heart and head. This is the kind of thing that Paul was addressing when he said, "Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand." (Philip. 4:5) One cannot reach true moderation without using the head and the heart as the Lord leads. God help us to grow into mature and balanced believers, lest we dim the light of Christ and quench the Holy Spirit in our lives.
