Who is your King of glory? What does it mean to say that Jesus is my King? How does that change the way I live? If Jesus is my King, then we both have privileges and responsibilities. Subjects owe their monarch obedience and reverence. The King takes care of his subjects, provides for them and keeps them safe. Now, most of us don’t like taking orders, being told what to do, but that’s what obedience calls for. Reverence is so distant from our everyday experience we hardly recognize it. When I try to think of an example, I have two: first, the look of new parents as they see their new-born for the first time; second, an elderly man or woman holding the hand of his/her spouse who is obviously struggling, but their love and care for each other is obvious. When I was a child, a man would tip his hat passing a church of any denomination. People used to stop respectfully when a funeral procession went by. Today, people are in such a hurry, they try to break into the line of mourners. Our King has given us everything we need. He has saved us from sin and death and promised us eternal life. Jesus has and continues to do his part. We need to step up our game and do ours. We need to obey and not make excuses for our bad behavior; we need to be more respectful for one another as well as for all of God’s creation. So, we need to answer the question, who is our King of glory.
Prayer: Lord, even during this joyous season we forget who the season is for. We forget to obey and be thankful for all our blessings. Give us the graces we need in this season to take time for you. Amen.
