"The God Who Makes Things Happen"
The Christmas narrative in Luke 2 reveals something about God that most of us skip right over. 740 years before these events occurred Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would give birth, and Micah added that this birth would occur in Bethlehem. So now Mary, a virgin, is about to give birth to the Christ-child, but she’s in the wrong place. She’s in Nazareth, not Bethlehem.
Ah, not a problem for the Eternal One. He puts it in the heart of Caesar, ruler of the vast Roman empire, to make everyone return to their birthplace to update the tax rolls. Joseph, Mary’s betrothed was born in Bethlehem, and loath to leave her alone in Nazareth, he packs her off to Bethlehem--where the baby can be born in the correct location.
Do you see what happened? Nowhere in history does any emperor pull a stunt like this. Interrupting the lives and businesses of everyone in the known world to travel who knows how far to get home and register? It’s madness! And yet God caused Caesar to throw the entire empire into chaos for no other reason that to get little ol’ Mary and Joseph to the right spot for the miraculous birth.
This is what we might call, A God For The Little People. And you can imagine this same God intently watching over them during their arduous 82 mile journey, making sure they arrive safe and sound at the divinely designated place before her water broke.
The angel said, “Nothing is impossible for God,” and that’s absolutely true. But you gotta love watching how he does it.
