"Alone with Jesus" "And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst."(John 8:9)When Jesus returned to the temple the next day from the Mount of Olives, the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman whom they had caught in adultery and asked Him to give a judgment. This was not because they wanted to find out God’s will, but because they wanted to trap Jesus and so have an accusation to bring against Him. If He did not condemn the woman to death, they could accuse Him to the Sanhedrin of defying the law. If He did condemn her to death, they could accuse Him to the government of usurping Rome’s authority (John 8:1-6).Now, Jesus saw their cunning and refused to give a legal judgment. Instead, He challenged the woman’s accusers to exercise some moral judgment on themselves, with the result that none had the courage to pursue the matter further (John 8:7-8).Then we read in verse 9 where those religious phonies, beginning with the oldest member of the bunch took off one by one having now sensing what it was when the Lord Jesus convicted with His words. We also see Jesus now alone with this accused woman. My thoughts here were how wonderful it is to be "Alone with Jesus.""Alone with Jesus." What a sweet and holy spot! What a blessed refuge to which our soul finds comfort from the charges of Satan, the challenges of the world, and the course of our life! What a place it is for our heart to tell its needs in the ear of Infinite love, tenderness, and compassion!"Alone with Jesus." How different Christianity would present itself to the world if the Lord’s people were more alone with Him. What humility, and gentleness, and love, would characterize all our words and work! What holiness stamped on our souls for almighty God to take pleasure in. What fewer judgments we'd aim toward others, and how many more we'd point toward ourselves. What calmness and joyful submission to the Lord’s will would result from being "Alone with Jesus."Friends, be much "Alone with Jesus." Then our going home to glory will be one of sunshine, whether it be from the shout that opens the grave or through the clouds of Heaven to meet Jesus in the air.
