"The Perfect Sunday"
Several years ago a poll was taken in Britain asking what the perfect Sunday looked like. Two thousand people mentioned leisurely breakfasts, pottering around the house, watching television, reading a book, listening to music, doing some gardening. Nearly one in 10 said they would spend their Sunday afternoon at the pub, while one in seven decided Sundays are made for doing food shopping to keep the cupboards stocked for the rest of the week.
Attending church did not appear in the poll. Not once.
This is shocking for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that Great Britain was once the epicenter of Christianity. Churches were full, missionaries were being sent to the rest of the world, schools were flourishing, and deep faith in the God of the Bible was considered a pre-requisite to parliament.
What happened? One generation failed to pass faith along to the next.
Saddest of all is the fact that people are not hearing the gospel, not being introduced to great truths of the Bible that answer life’s big questions—why are we here, where did we come from, how did it all begin, and is there life beyond the grave. Churches are places for families to enjoy together, for friendships to blossom, and most of all, to encounter the living God who is the eternal essence of love.
The polls here in America tell us that church attendance is waning and faith is fading. May it not be so. To abandon Christ’s bride is to abandon Christ, and forfeit one’s soul.
