///@space_waterfallc: Cheer up pal there’s a huge coronal hole to look at. ☀️
Coronal holes are regions on the Sun where the solar magnetic field flows outwards. In the second image, taken at an extreme UV wavelength, the ‘hole’ is seen as a giant black spot. The magnetic field here does not come back down to form a ‘closed’ loop in the corona. Instead, these ‘open’ field lines stretch away from the Sun and carry fast streams of particles (the solar wind). If the streams are in our direction and hit our magnetosphere, we can get minor geomagnetic activity (I.e. aurora!). The streams aren’t quite as fast as a large coronal mass ejection but this coronal hole could cause some decent activity later this week if it remains.
This hole is nice and large, many times the size of Earth, but they can be any shape and size!
