"Numbering our Days with Wisdom" "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." (90:12)This Psalm is attributed to Moses. It teaches us of the brevity of life. While a thousand years are as a day to the Lord, the life of man is like a few hours in the night to Him. Our times are in His hand (Psalm 31:15), and at any moment in time as we know it, our life on Earth is over.In general, most folks don't care to talk about death. I believe the main reason many people who have a horrifying fear death is because they don't have a holy fear of God.Moses attributes much of man's trouble to a lack of the fear of God. The solution to our lack of the fear of God is to learn how quickly life passes. If we knew how few days we really have before we stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ to give an account of our service, we would be in earnest to know how to wisely spend our days here. We would see which choices would be a waste of time and which ones would prepare us for eternity.Moses goes on to ask for God to establish the work of our hands. In other words, guide us to do things that are lasting. The things that are passing are not worth the few and precious days we have here.Ask the elderly folks again what they regret doing or not having done and it is almost always something to do with not considering what are the right choices to make or making decisions in haste. As Christians, only God can give us a heart of wisdom to spend our days as He has planned uniquely for each of us (Ephesians 2:10). We must seek His heart to have a heart of wisdom. We, like the verse says, are to "apply our hearts unto wisdom." Well, the best way I know how to APPLY the heart unto wisdom, Is to ASK God for it. And oh my, what a promise we find to our asking for wisdom and God's answering in James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." That promise given for you and I is indeed worth a standing ovation followed by a round of AMENS to be heard echoing along Heaven's Street of Gold.Friends, if we would study each verse of this 90th Psalm, we would see a soul deeply aware of human limitations, the rapid passage of time, and the need for wisdom to be applied to our heart which the Lord promises to give.
