"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile." (Psalm 32:1-2)
In Old Testament times, there were laws that governed the rituals of dealing with sin. The sacrifices and offerings that were given were a picture of Christ who would become the one-time final sacrifice for sin.
Though the people of Israel followed the instructions given, some of them knew that it was impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to wash away sin. They knew the sacrifice was important, but they also knew it didn't change them.
When a person trusts Jesus Christ for salvation, change will be the result. I've always believed it involves much more than a change of mind, because people change their mind many times on any given day. So that old dog won't hunt. I believe it involves a change of heart which leads to a change of direction.
You'll recall when the wise men in the 2nd chapter of Matthew came with their gifts for Jesus when He was 2 years old or younger, the Scriptures tell us that when they saw Mary and the child, they worshipped Him. They didn't worship Mary, they worshipped Jesus (Matthew 2:11). That truth right there ought to be preached from the housetops!
Then a warning Word from Heaven was heard, and the wise we learn, went home ANOTHER WAY (Matthew 2:12). There was a change in direction after they met Jesus. They didn't go back the same way; they went home a different way.
When a sinner has an encounter with Jesus and sees the Son of God for Who He really is, and also see who they really are, they don't continue on the way they did before they came to Him. There's a change in their lifestyle. A desire to live for Jesus involves a change in direction because of a change of heart.
In this psalm David tells of the blessing on the man whose sin is covered. Guilt is indeed a heavy load, isn't it? Now, if we continue to hide it, we entertain thoughts of continuing in that evil pattern. But when we are convicted by the Holy Spirit that our sin is destroying us and needs to be forsaken, we bring it to the Lord by confession. Then we can obtain forgiveness and find that wonderful blessing David was speaking of.
Friends, there's that Heavenly blessing of unspeakable joy for those whose transgressions are forgiven by God's grace and whose sins have been cleansed by the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Is there some unconfessed sin your life that has robbed you of the joy of the Lord? Oh, child of God, don't cover that sin, confess it.
