"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." (Romans 13:14)
Several years ago, I was reading a somewhat comical story about a father and his young son who were planning on going shopping one day, but the son became ill and was unable to go with his dad.
The father told his son, “Now son, since you're not feeling well today, I don’t want you to go swimming with your friends like you enjoy doing every day at the pond."
The son replied, "Okay father, I won't do that."
After the father had finished his shopping, he drove past the pond where the neighborhood kids would swim, and he saw his son splashing around in the water with all his buddies.
He stopped the car, called his son over and said, “Didn't I tell you not to go swimming.”
The son answered, "But daddy, I just came down here to watch the other boys and I fell in."
The father said, "Then why are you wearing your bathing suit?"
The little fella shuffled his feet a bit and answered, "Well, I just put them on in case I was tempted."
You know folks, that little boy made "provision for the flesh" didn't he? And by doing so, he fulfilled the lusts thereof. For the Christian who wants to do right and please God, they'll find that every day is a day of temptation to do wrong. From sunup till sundown, we battle the world, the flesh, and the devil. Concerning the world, we're told to love not the world. When it comes to the devil, the Bible tells us to resist him.
As to the flesh, this verse I posted above exhorts us to, "...make not provision for the flesh." Why are we to obey that command? Because in failing to heed that warning, we find that this same verse continues with what the result will be, "...to fulfill the lusts thereof."
Make no mistake about it, the temptations from the devil and the lusts of the flesh he offers us, have plagued mankind since the Garden of Eden and will continue to do so until sin and death are no more. The devil has been peddling his death-dealing drugs to unsuspecting victims since Adam and Eve. His evil drug is called LSD....Lust-Sin-Death.
Like the little boy in that story, we often say to the Lord, "Okay Father, I won't do that." But when the devil hits us hard with temptation, and when we see the temporary pleasure it brings, we give in to that lust which ends up in sin and eventually death. "Never sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate."
Friends, you and I have the answer on how to "make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof ", and it's by appropriating those first 8 words found in that same verse, "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ."
