"Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen." (2 Kings 4:1)Here's another one of those great stories in the Bible that should hit home for all of us because whenever we see those words, "a certain woman" or "a certain man" in the Scriptures, we can be sure that the Holy Spirit had each of us in mind somewhere down the road. You know folks, there are times when the faithful man or woman of God will fall into financial difficulty. Now that doesn't mean they have fallen overboard by being unfaithful or disobedient to the Lord. On the contrary, many times it can be a test of their faith. Now we learn right from the get go that this woman's husband had been serving in the company of the prophets but wound up dying in debt. This God-fearing man's widow was afraid the bill collectors would show up at her door and take her 2 boys as slaves in payment for the debt. So there stands Elisha who had nothing of his own to give her. There was no jingling of coins in any of his pockets. As a matter of fact, when he was called by God and followed Elijah, he left everything behind and used his yoke for wood and his plow oxen as a sacrifice. (1Kings 19:21)In verse 2, Elisha asked her 2 questions, "What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house?" She answered, "Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil." Sometimes we only have a little for God to work with, but a little is all the Lord ever needs, isn't it. All of us could testify that God can certainly do a lot with a little. When we are willing to walk by faith and place that little bit we have into His hands, it's just like Him to go ahead and multiply it!Well, Elisha tells her in verse 3, "...Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few." Elisha told this woman, in so many words, to gather up as many vessels as she could because he expected God to answer in a big way. "If you plan on going to God's Supermarket to get the goodies, He has there for you, make sure you take a big basket with you."When that ole neighborhood treasure hunt for vessels was completed, she poured the little oil she had left, and it kept coming and coming out of that jar. It continued to flow until every last cup, and bowl, and saucer was full. But the oil stayed when there were no more vessels (v.6). Was that a hard thing for God to do back then? Thank you for asking that question. For we read in Jermiah 32:26-27: "Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?" I firmly believe that if they had collected every vessel in the whole country, the Lord would have filled them as well.Friends, like that dear widow woman found out, there is no end to what God can do when faith walks hand in hand with His promises. When God promises to give, be prepared to receive. For He is our MIGHTY GOD promising to perform that which seems impossible to us.
