“For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:3) Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the promised Messiah, the King! He is the highest, the greatest, the most magnificent of all! In Matthew 6:13--“…For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” Yet, as exalted as He is, He came to earth as one of us to bring salvation to us, and to give us courage and confidence when the devil attacks us. In Matthew 4, we see that Jesus allowed Himself to be tempted like we are tempted, and He was victorious over the devil! Hebrews 4:15—"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Jesus’ victory over Satan's temptations, shows us how to achieve the same in our lives. He did not go up on the Mount of Temptation ill-prepared, but Matthew 4:2 tells us, "And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights…” Even Jesus did not face the devil without fasting and prayer. The 3 temptations of Jesus are 4:3--Turn stones into bread—to gratify Himself; 4:5-6--Test the Bible for truth; 4:8-9--Give in to Satan. Jesus answered all 3 with the same Biblical admonition—“It is written!” Just as Jesus used the Word of God to answer the devil, so we must, also. The devil has no power over us when we know and trust the Bible. Our great God allowed Himself to be tempted in order to help us know what to do when Satan tries to bring doubt into our lives. Notice that in all 3, he started with the word, "if," casting doubt on God's Word. Things will come into our lives that frighten us, or even damage us. This is normal, and Satan builds on these things to make us doubt the love and power of God. HAVE FAITH IN GOD! "Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me." (Acts 27:25)
