QUESTION CONCERNING MENTAL CASES
I was asked about the spiritual state, or STANDING rather, of mentally-challenged people. It's best to simply say that such people are SAFE, though not technically "saved" via a new birth. They are looked upon by God in the same manner as children who have no knowledge of good and evil. A good verse for this is Deuteronomy 1:39: "Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it."
Although this verse doesn't deal with eternal salvation, it does show God's mind toward those with no knowledge of good and evil. The little ones who had no knowledge between good and evil were not punished. This is due to the fact that sin is not imputed where there is no law, and there is no law in the heart of a child or a mentally-challenged person. Two good New Testament verses are Romans 4:15 and Romans 5:13 . . .
"Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression." (Rom. 4:15)
"(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law." (Rom. 5:13)
Simply give the gospel to such people, pray for them, and let them believe the best way they can. God can handle the rest and will do so justly.
