Making an electric car typically involves 40 per cent more carbon emissions than producing a petrol or diesel car. This is because the vehicles' batteries are composed of rare metals that have to be laboriously mined in large quantities.. Also due to the EV's construction this meant the carbon break-even point with a fossil fuel car occurred typically around 48,500 miles.. But Volkswagen's estimates for the carbon break-even point of its electric cars are even higher, with the figure for an e-Golf put at 77,000 miles!
