Question ....
Why pray , and pray so often ??
Is it hard to pray to an unseen, infinite, God???....You bet!”
And, living in this world so bathed in materialism, about the only reason even Christians give me for praying is “to get answers.” ( Not for direction) So when I don’t get the answers I want (and sometimes not even any answers), I don’t know why I should keep praying.
The 7 fold answer...
How and why Jesus prayed...our example.
He prayed all the time. The Bible says that “He would often withdraw to the wilderness and pray.” Often is right. He prayed just about every chance He got. He was perfect; so it wasn’t like He was praying for forgiveness of sin or anything like that. Why?, Why????
1.It builds our relationship with our Saviour, like building a wall one brick may seem small and insignificant but together they are impenetrable. We are told to come repeatedly with our prayers but not repetitively...Luke 18:7... In fact we are to be in a constant state of prayer ( 1st Thessalonians 5:17) This doesn’t mean praying constantly but being in a state of such closeness to God you can throw up a prayer instantly ( Nehemiah 2:4)
2.To beat temptation, Christ tells us to pray to overcome temptation....Mt 6:13
How could He know this? Because He, too, faced His own darkness. Looming in the next few hours was the eternity of death and hell for all the combined sins of humanity He was to pay for.
3.To determine Gods perfect will not permissive will, there is sometimes a very fine line between the 2 and bathing a problem in prayer will clear that up.
Jesus prayer for direction...He prays all night about what seemed at the time an insignificant issue in history: the choosing from the crowd which followed Him a special group of disciples which we now know as the Apostles....Luke 6:12-16
4.What works did Jesus do on earth? Oh, just a few simple ones: cleansed the lepers, healed the sick, proclaimed release to the captives, taught tens of thousands, led thousands to salvation, raised the dead, healed those born blind.
You might say that one Christian in a hundred thousand or a million could do those things....Why??... Prayer is as powerful as God is powerful, so ask.
If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth....Mark 9:23
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened....Matthew 7:7-8
So are you upset when you ask it doesn’t happen??..God knows way better than you how to best answer that prayer, remember He’s outside time and part of faith is to just trust Him, He knows what He,s doing.
5.A spiritual weapon....just like in Superman , weapons from this earth cannot harm him but weapons from his world can.Same with satan .Paul describes a list of spiritual weapons in Ephesians 6:11-18 and leaves the most powerful one , the one we think is most worthless for last...Prayer.!!!!
6.The hard work of non repetitive prayer awakens you spiritually.
The prayer of 2nd Chronicles 7:14 enables you as a believer to call on God to enter time and space in such obvious ways that masses of believers became stalwart and committed, and multitudes of unbelievers crowd into the Kingdom of God.
7.Prayer is valuable to God, it is like an incense, an odor that God likes.
Revelation 8:4,Psalm 141:2.Just as we have different aromas that please us, so does God.Odors of repentance, of witness, of love. There are also bad odors too God abhors ( Leviticus 10:1-2)
