"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;" (Colossians 2:13-14)
Notice two things that must not be missed here in verse 14:
First of all, Jesus is the One doing the nailing at the cross. While it is true that He allowed the Roman soldiers to pin Him down and pierce His hands and feet, fastening His body to the cross, we must remember that Jesus was in control of the entire situation. He prophesied of the cross before He ever hung on it. He also reminded His disciples that no one was able to take His life from Him, but rather, He would lay it down Himself (John 10:18).
Jesus had come into the world for a purpose, and that purpose was to die, the just for the unjust, on the cross. Jesus was the One Who was nailing our sins to His cross when He allowed Himself to be crucified.
Next we find that on the cross Jesus accomplished something definite. When He was crucified, that long rap sheet of our sins was blotted out. He nailed it to His cross. That cross should have been our cross, but Jesus called it HIS cross (Matthew 27:32; Mark 15:21; John 19:17; Colossians 1:20; 2:14). Our sins were laid upon Him. The condemnation that He bore was our condemnation. When we trusted Christ for salvation, the condemnation against us was no more.
The same words that Jesus spoke to Nicodemus that long ago night are the same words He speaks to us, "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." (John 3:18) Folks, that's why Paul wrote, "There is therefore NOW no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1) (caps mine) No condemnation NOW and no condemnation later. Jesus nailed everything down for us on His cross.
My saved friend, Jesus Christ nailed your criminal record to His cross. You've been quickened together with Him and all trespasses have been forgiven. Yes, your record is clean and there is therefore NOW no condemnation against you.
