"And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people." (2 Chronicles 17:9)
During this time in history, the people of Judah were Biblically illiterate. They did not have at their disposal the Word of God to daily feed upon like you and I do. Therefore, the people were given to all sorts of beliefs and WAYS.
King Jehoshaphat realized that knowing God's Word was the first step in getting folks to live as God expected them; so, he initiated a nationwide Spiritual Application Teaching program, or as I like to call it, "The first S.A.T."
Jehoshaphat's program back then brought about a reversal of the religious decline that had occurred during the final days of his father king Asa's reign. This grand teaching of "Putting God First" in the people's souls and minds instilled within them the strength to trust the Lord with all their heart and a sense of commitment to His promises and precepts. The end result was that the nation began to follow God.
The Bible tells us in Psalm 33:12, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance." No matter how you slice it, that truth applies to any nation that puts God first! With a Bible in nearly every household in America, I believe this is still a great country. Yet, America is a country that is indeed Biblically illiterate. This is true concerning even the way of salvation.
For instance, we see an individual coming down the street and we ask them, "How can a person know for sure they're going to Heaven and what do they base it upon?" They answer with a WAY they seem to think is right.
We ask another person the same question and they give an entirely different answer. Yet, it is a WAY they seem to think is right as well. On and on we could go asking the same question and hear numerous ways folks believe to be the right WAY.
Yes, we have a potpourri of WAYS here in America that people think is the right way, don't we? The way of Water, the way of Works, the way of Wonders, and the way of Wisdom just to name a few.
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 14:12, "There is a WAY which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (caps mine) Well thank God, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
America today, like Judah of old, stands in desperate need of a Spiritual Application Teaching program. And that is where you and I come into the picture. Like those good folks during Jehoshaphat's days, we need men and women of God who, "went about throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people."
Friends, may we do likewise in our area where we live and teach others the Truth that will profit any who hear and heed the Word of God.
