"And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." (1 Kings 19:11-12)Elijah had come to the mountain of God, the place of fresh inspiration. He saw the wind so strong it rent the mountains and broke the rocks, but the LORD was not in the wind. Then the ground shook with an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After that, fire followed the earthquake, and you guessed it, the LORD was not in the fire either. God had not passed by and spoke to him in any of those things. Those things preceded God. How then did God come to Elijah? He came and spoke to him (verses 13-18) in that still small voice. Now, what was this discouraged prophet learning from God's lesson to Him? Perhaps he thought the fire from Heaven would transform the hearts of the people causing a national revolt and return to God. That rain back in chapter 18:41-45 had been a physical sign that God was working through Elijah. Surely, he thought they would all listen to him now. But all those physical things only preceded the real Work of God. For as it was then, so it is now, it's His still small voice to our hearts that brings about real change, and the heart is where real change takes place!Too many people today are always on the lookout for some great physical sign or manifestation. They want to see, or hear, or feel something that will move their senses. But folks, instead of having our feelings excited, we need our faith increased. And that comes by reading, studying, and hearing the Word of God. The Bible tells us, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)Friends, are you looking for something spectacular and forgetting the Power of the still small voice found in God's Word? Let's get alone with God in the Scriptures and listen to Him whisper great and glorious truths. For it's there we'll find that the Bible is God's Mountain of fresh inspiration to our souls!
