Now is the time to get as prepared as you can if you have animals who are sensitive to fireworks.
- Walk them before the fireworks begin, so they are inside the house and secure.
- Be sure they have proper ID and the contact information on them is correct.
- Try using white noise when the fireworks begin. Turn on fans, air conditioner, turn the volume up on radio or TV, etc. There's some classical music called "Through A Dog's Ear" that some people claim has calming effects for dogs.
- Try creating a safe haven for them. Dogs are den animals....they're looking for a "cave" to escape from the noise.
- If their anxiety is severe, a vet appointment might be your best bet to discuss a medication that would help soothe your pet's anxiety caused by fireworks, thunder and the like.
- For dogs kept outside who are fearful of fireworks, obviously the best and kindest thing to do is bring them inside until the fireworks are over.
- Farm animals could also suffer from anxiety caused by fireworks. Might be a good idea to secure them safely in their barn.
Keep in mind, July 4 is the night most animals go missing. More than any other day of the year. Please take the necessary steps to keep your pets safe. Make sure they have on collars with tags that have the correct contact info. If chipped, make sure the chip has the correct contact info. Everyone might not like fireworks, but everyone certainly can still have a safe holiday, including our pets.
