"And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD." (II Kings 19:14)This is one of those great examples in the Bible concerning prayer that we should emulate. Hezekiah is king over Judah when the cruel and powerful Assyrian army marches against them. The Assyrian king, Sennacherib, has this big shot, loud-mouth Rabshakeh, the army’s spokesman, tell Hezekiah not to trust in his God for deliverance (II Kings 18:28-30).Now this was an enormous threat and a taunt all wrapped into one little greeting card. There is the imminent danger of Jerusalem being stomped into the ground by the Assyrian empire. And if that's not enough, to top it off, there is this verbal warning not to look for their God to come running to the rescue.Well now, how does Hezekiah deal with this letter? He receives it, he reads it, and then he responds to it by taking it straight to the Lord and spreads it before Him. What a wonderful picture of prayer! It is the spreading of our problems, our heartaches, and our struggles before the Lord. The Word of God reminds us that we can bring every one of our requests to the Lord saying, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." (Philippians 4:6)Are you wrestling with a temptation over a sin that is threatening to conquer you or someone you love? "Spread it before the LORD." Is your heart weighed down with some terrible worry, or sorrow, or pain? "Spread it before the LORD." Have you experienced those taunts from your enemy, the devil, that he loves to hurl at you? "Spread it before the LORD." D.L. Moody used to say, "Spread out your petition before God, and then say, '"Thy will, not mine be done.'"Friends, no one has ever come to the Lord asking for help and gone away disappointed. Hezekiah didn't, and you and I won't either when we "Spread it before the LORD."
