“It shall be well.” (2 Kings 4:23c)We read in this chapter that the widow of one of the prophets was in desperate trouble. She had hardly any food left and was about to lose her only means of income; for her sons were to be taken from her in payment for a debt. Elisha’s miraculous provision of oil enabled her to pay the debt and so preserve a few of God’s faithful in days of extreme hardship (vs1-7).Another one of Israel’s faithful women was the wife of a wealthy landowner. She recognized Elisha as God’s representative and offered him hospitality as often as he needed it. As with the poor widow of the previous story, Elisha provided for this woman’s future, in this case by promising her a son (vs 8-17).Well, some years later that young son died. The woman, still strong in faith, reasoned that seeing the prophet had promised her a son in the first place, even though she had not asked for a son, he had the responsibility to correct what had gone wrong, and that it exactly what God did through Elisha. Now, with that being said, note those words again: "it shall be well." This was the language of a believer in trouble; and it should be readily in our vocabulary as well when facing difficult circumstances. Our trials, troubles, and tests may be great; but "it shall be well" with them that fear and yet trust in God.Are you alarmed at the powerful working of corruption within you? "It shall be well", for sin shall not have dominion over you. (Romans 6:14)Are you distressed by the evil suggestions and powerful temptations of Satan? "It shall be well", and the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. (Romans 16:20)Is your soul cast down by the heartaches. and the hatred that you daily experience as you travel along on the Lord's Highway of Holiness? "It shall be well", and all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)Do you think your case is singular, and no one else on Earth has ever gone through what you're going through right now? "It shall be well", there hath no temptation taken you, but such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)Friends, since God is consistent in His character, He will be faithful to His promises to us. And oh, what precious promises we are given by our gracious God. Whether in sickness or in health, whether it be in life or in death, remember those four words: “It shall be well.”Those promised words which come our way,With joy unspeakable who can tell?In times like these, and throughout our days,The righteous can joyfully declare, "it shall be well.
