"Heavenly Point of View"
Heard some guy the other day going on about a hot air balloon ride that gave him “a new point of view.” He described passing over residential areas and not being able to tell the make and model of the cars, and how the houses and yards and pools were so tiny. He said it hit him like a ton of bricks that we spend our lives, our time, our money, our efforts drawing pleasure from such tiny little things.
He’s got a point there, and not just from the perspective of size, but also eternity. All these things are temporal. They are part of a very short interval in the timeline of eternity. Eventually they all decay and rust and rot, as do we. Then we die, all this is gone, and we enter a new stage of life which is as different as the world of a grub differs from the world of a dragonfly. The old southern spiritual said it well—“This world is not my home, I’m just a passin’ through; my treasure is laid up somewhere beyond the blue.” That being the case, to invest the majority of our efforts in tiny houses and gardens and cars here on earth is tantamount to decorating and landscaping a cottage that will soon be torn down to make room for a castle.
Someone made the very sober suggestion that our eternal dwelling place will be constructed of the material we send ahead (Matthew 6:19-20—“lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”). Supposing that’s the case, why lavish everything on the tiny house here instead of sending it on ahead for the master-builder to use up there?
