Matt. 7: 6 “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
We should share the gospel with as many people as possible and constantly be looking for ways to be a witness. There are times, however, when we need to use discernment in how we talk with someone and ask if it is needful to do so at that time. To take something priceless and let the other denigrate it may not be wise. Jesus is bringing up the picture of priests giving holy bread to wild dogs or giving something valuable to a pig that would not value it but stomp it in the ground.
It is not a good idea to have a 6 hr. discussion with a cultist who comes to your door. No one has ever been won to Christ that way. It’s like trying to sell a vacuum cleaner to someone who has come to sell you a vacuum cleaner. Many feel there is even a prohibition against participating in listening to their heresy II John 1: 10-11. It is very important to be sensitive to those who are open to the gospel. Fruitless discussions and endless debates yielding nothing but frustration will not edify and most likely discourage us. Be careful to represent Christ worthy so that what we have to give people is manna from heaven and more priceless than gold. After all, isn’t that what God’s Word ought to be to us anyway?
