Acts 8:34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
If you are familiar with the passage, Acts 8:26-40, you will probably have noticed the first man in the chariot, called "a man" in Acts 8:27. Then we find Philip getting up into the chariot, the "some man" mentioned in Acts 8:31, whom the eunuch needed to guide him in the scriptures. But there was another man in the chariot, the man who MUST be present in any soul-winning situation, the "some other man" of Acts 8:34, the Lord Jesus Christ. The "a man" is the SINNER; the "some man" is the SOUL-WINNER; and the "some other man" is the SAVIOR. Today I want you to think with me about that "some other man," THE THIRD MAN IN THE CHARIOT.
Who was this THIRD man, the "some other man"? Well, He was JESUS. Using the passage, let's notice some things that the scriptures say about Him.
First, JESUS IS THE MAN WHO BRINGS DELIVERANCE FROM SIN (Acts 8:32,35). Jesus is the Savior of sinners, and He saves them by the fact that He was born supernaturally; He behaved sinlessly; He bore our sins sacrificially; He beat the opposition successfully; and He bestows salvation gracefully (Rom. 6:23; Eph. 2:8-9).
Second, JESUS IS THE MAN WHO BRINGS A DISPLAY OF SALVATION (Acts 8:35-38). The display I'm talking about was the baptism of the new convert. When he heard about Jesus, the eunuch trusted Christ as his Savior. We know that from Acts 8:37. The new convert displayed the Lord's salvation, first of all by his submissive spirit (V. 36), his speech (V. 37), and his submission in baptism (V. 38). Baptism pictures the Lord's death, burial, and resurrection!
Third, JESUS IS THE MAN WHO BRINGS DELIGHT TO YOUR SOUL.
Acts 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
Note that word, "rejoicing." The new convert had joy in his heart, because of the pardon of sin, the promptness of his service, and the power over his stumbling blocks (the desert, the trip, etc.).
Finally, JESUS IS THE MAN WHO BRINGS DIRECTION TO YOUR STEPS (Acts 8:39). The Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch went on "his way." Jesus can turn you completely around and send you in a different direction! He not only gives you a new birth, making you into a child of God, but He also gives you new actions, new affections, a new appearance, and new associations!
Have YOU trusted this third man in the chariot, the Lord Jesus Christ, as your personal Savior? Have you been baptized? Have you overcome whatever obstacles there may be so that you are an obedient Christian? I urge you to let God have His will and way in your life today!
