"Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble." (1 Peter 5:5)
All around us today we hear the call to esteem yourself, believe in yourself, promote yourself, and reward yourself. But God’s Word calls us to humility. God is holy in all He says and does, and He calls for and commands us to be holy as well (I Peter 15-16).
God hates pride and always has and always will resist the proud. He brought about those plagues of devastation in the land of Egypt after Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey Him?" He put Nebuchadnezzar down on all fours to munch on the grass like an animal after the king boasted of his accomplishments. We read where Herod was eaten up with worms when he failed to give glory to God (Acts 12:21-23).
As each of us search our own heart to see if there is pride that needs to be repented of and rooted out, consider this: humility is an acknowledgement of our unworthiness. Jacob declared, "I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant;" (Genesis 32:10) That ole publican smote upon his breast and cried out, "God be merciful to me a sinner." (Luke 18:13) Then we read as that same humble tax collector was heading for home, the Lord Jesus said in the very next verse, "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified."
You see folks, humility is recognizing our need and submitting to God. You and I may not understand some of the mighty things that God is patiently and lovingly unfolding in our lives, but we bow in submission and know that He, who knows all things, is working His perfect will and accomplishing His grand purpose in our life to be more like Jesus and less like us. That simply means believing what God says, accepting what His Word teaches, and making no attempt to explain it away.
Humility recognizes the need for grace. The humble soul will sense their own weaknesses and need, and by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within them, make haste to the Throne of Grace where they find mercy and grace to help in time of need. They know they need grace to pray, grace to witness, grace to overcome the world, grace to minister to others, and grace to love the unlovely. And oh, that matchless grace of God is indeed sufficient for you and for me!
Why, if it wasn't for the grace of God, not a single one of us would even be saved (Ephesians 2:8). From that very moment we trusted Jesus Christ for salvation, Praise the Lord, we have been given the Robe of our Redeemer's Righteousness, and have been wearing the Garments of God Grace.
Friend, how goes it with you today? Are you clothed with humility or are you clad with haughtiness?
