"And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." (John 12:20-24)
When certain Greeks had come to worship at Passover, they asked to see Jesus, Our Saviour knew His time had come. For the gospel to go into all the world, He knew He would first have to be rejected by the Jews, die for the sins of the world, and be raised again.
Jesus' vision was much bigger than being the king of the nation of Israel. He could see that He would reign in the hearts of people around the world who would trust Him. He also knew many would view the preaching of the Cross as foolishness. He knew that only a few would follow Him, even if it meant losing their own life while serving their Saviour.
Jesus could see that the offering of Himself as the final sacrifice would be that others who were willing to sacrifice their life as well and all its pleasures for the sake of the Gospel. They would follow Jesus and bring glory to God by showing sacrificial love to the world. It would be love that would draw others to follow as well, giving up everything to go wherever Jesus leads. If we wonder why we are not fruitful, we may find that it is because we have not died to ourselves.
Realizing the cost of the sacrifice Jesus was about to make, He asked that the Father's name be glorified. For the second time recorded in Scripture, an audible voice came from Heaven. In John 12:28, we are blessed indeed to hear that glorious conversation that took place that day between Father and Son: "Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."
You see, glory is the outshining of the eternal nature of God. When Jesus laid down His life for us, He clearly demonstrated the love of God. When we die to ourselves and follow Jesus, others see God's grace expressed in our testimony.
God continues to glorify His name in the lives of His people today. When you and I testify of the work of what Jesus has done for us, our witness will be that He can and will do the same for them.
Friends, may we die to self whereby the glory of God will be our witness to the truth that Jesus Christ was lifted up on that cruel and cursed Cross to draw all men unto Himself for salvation.
