On this Sunday ( Luke 24:1) there were two disciples that traveled to Emmaus from Jerusalem. As they walked together (probably returning from the Passover celebration in Jerusalem) it gave them opportunity to talk.
As they walked, they talked of the things that were weighing on their hearts....the things regarding the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. He came along side these disciples, and walked with them for a while. Yet for a short time they were miraculously prevented from seeing who Jesus was.
Jesus opened the conversation by asking them what they had talked about. Meaning Jesus had walked silently with them for a while, just listening as they carried on the conversation. Jesus skillfully played along with the conversation, encouraging the men to reveal their hearts and asking why they were sad.
The men explained what they did know about Jesus.
They knew His name and where He was from...
They knew He was a Prophet...
They knew He was mighty in deed and word.
They knew He was crucified.
They knew He promised to redeem Israel.
They knew others had said He rose from the dead.
But they were sad...because they had trusted in Jesus, but was now dead.
Jesus strangely called these believers fools and slow of heart ...strong language indeed to say to a believer.
Jesus told them that the problem with their belief was more in their heart than their head. They should have believed what all the prophets have spoken, that the Messiah would suffer first and then be received up in glory.
Isaiah 53:3-5
Isaiah 50:5-7
Daniel 9:26
Zechariah 12:10
Jesus ran them through Bible 101... Jesus began to teach them what was truly one of the most greatest Bible studies ever taught. Beginning in Moses and all the Prophets, He told them all about the Messiah.
As Jesus taught them, He acted as if He might continue on farther, but just like today,He did not want to force His company on them or anyone. But they urged Him showing that even though they didn’t know this was Jesus in their midst, they knew they wanted to spend as much time as they could with this man.
They invited Him home for supper, and as Jesus did many times before He took, blessed, brake and gave the 2 travelers bread.Suddenly ( I think because of the 4 step ritual vs 35) their eyes were opened as to who He is.
Notice... Neither of them knew the other’s heart burned until Jesus left.
So they rose up right away and went right to Jerusalem.. ( a seven mile walk one way) and talked to the 11 disciples that were still there.
NOW they had the passion to tell of the great news of Jesus’ resurrection to them and anyone who would listen.
Jesus may be right in front of you right now as you read this, walking with you and sitting down with you at every meal, watching what you do and your eyes could be prevented from seeing Him.
