WHY WAS JESUS OBEDIENT UNTO DEATH ON THE CROSS?
Jesus was not crucified against His will. He became obedient unto the death of the cross for these reasons.
.(1) PRO-ACTIVITY: He was obedient unto death because He took the initiative instead of us in bringing us to God I John 4:9-10, 20 (God didn’t wait for you to pay the price for sin by going to Hell before He would say I wish I had done something about them) I Pet. 1:20)
(2) PERFECTION: He was obedient unto death because He had to obey the demands of the law. Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is everyone that continueth not in all things which are written in the law book to do them. This enabled Him to offer His perfect life for our imperfect one. I Peter 3:18.
(3) PURPOSE: He had to be obedient unto death because this was the only way He could bring us to God. (God cannot accept imperfection, so He accepted Christ’s perfection in our place. He had to suffer for what we deserve). Hebrews 9:22, Gal. 2:24, Isaiah 53:5-7I John 1:7.
(4) PUNISHMENT: He had to be obedient unto death because sin has to be paid for by death. Romans 6:23, Gal. 3:13, Heb 2:14, (Only victory over death can destroy the curse of sin resulting in death) I Cor. 15:56-57.
(5) PARDON: He became obedient unto death because His innocent life had to be substituted for our guilty one to pay the price of our sin. I Cor. 5:19-21.
When Charles Spurgeon lay on his deathbed, he told a friend, “My theology now is found in four little words: JESUS died for ME. I don’t say this is all I would preach if I were to be raised up again, but it is more than enough for me to die upon.
