Matt. 27:46
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
The vocal point of Jesus suffering on the cross came with this statement, probably at 3 PM. Jesus recited Ps. 22 really fulfilling prophecies, while expressing the deepest agony of the cross. Many believe at this point, Christ was taking the full brunt of judgment for our sin. The timing of this statement during His being on the cross leads us to infer this is what is happening.
The physical suffering was so brutal, and the humiliation was so embarrassing. But the feeling of being forsaken by the Father may have been the most difficult pain to bear. Was the trade of our sin for His righteousness being made at this moment? Was the full payment for our sin being transacted at this time? Was the deep feeling of separation from God experienced as all experience it that go to Hell? We can with certainty say the sacrifice of Christ on the cross caused Him to experience all of these things in dying for us.
This obedience to death by Jesus was necessary for our salvation. Why can anyone ignore it or be angry about it” To know all Jesus experienced is indescribable. Jesus gave expression to all these realities of what He was experiencing on the cross. The wonderful news of the cross is He experienced all of this so that we will not have to experience any of this if we trust Him as our Saviour. There should be no reason we should not accept Him because of what He did for us.
