John 3:1-16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (3:16).
Priceless Gifts
“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.” This is the length to which God was willing to go in expressing His love for us. He gave His only begotten Son. What are the most meaningful and precious treasures in our lives? They are certainly not material or monetary.
Did you ever notice the value that we place on things that have no particular intrinsic worth at all? Did you have a little baby who died, who fell asleep in Jesus? Do you have a picture of him? Ah, how treasured is that little piece of paper! Do you have a lock of the baby’s hair? It is worthless in itself, yet how precious. Do you have a wedding band? On the market it wouldn’t sell for much. But what value it holds for you, because someone who loved you gave it to you! It represents life itself. If a man had the whole universe, and he had a boy who died in Vietnam, I can easily imagine that father standing up and saying, “I own thirty million stars and I own ten thousand universes. I own forty continents and fifty oceans. But I would give every star I own, every planet that is mine, and all the continents and oceans if I could just have that boy back again.” The priceless gifts are of the soul and of the heart.
God has given us the stars and the moon to shine at night and the sun to shine by day. He has given us the earth on which to walk. But all of these things are as nothing compared to the love of God in the gift of His Son, Christ Jesus. When God gave the Lord to us, He gave Himself. When Christ died for us, the God of heaven suffered. Oh, the length to which God did go to express His love for us!
