The American Spruance-class destroyer USS Peterson (DD-969) sailing near the Soviet Moma AGS Nakhodka-class reconnaissance vessel in the Sargazos Sea in 1983, during the Victor III-class SSN K-324 nuclear submarine rescue operation.On Halloween Day in 1983, the K-324 hooked the trailing matrix cable towed from the USS McCloy frigate (FF-1038) about 300 miles west of Bermuda, causing damage to the submarine propeller.The Soviet attack ship was towed to Firefighters, Cuba, for repair, and Red Fleet technicians recovered parts of the McCloy matrix.Photo: The Jose Ramón Carbonell Collection
