John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.There are some things that the Bible says that Jesus HAD to do. It said that He MUST do some things. For instance, one of the MUSTS of the Lord was that He HAD to die for sinners and rise again (Mt. 16:21; Jn. 20:9) Another MUST for Him was to be about the Father's business (Lk. 2:49; Jn. 9:4). Jesus said that He MUST bring "other sheep" into the fold (Jn. 10:16). Another must was PREACHING, which included one-on-one preaching as well as to groups (Lk. 4:43). I want to especially point out, however, that the Bible uses the word, "MUST," with regard to certain divine appointments of our Lord with sinners to lead them to God. Jesus said to Zacchaeus, "... for to day I MUST abide at thy house" (Lk. 19:5. That is, I believe, the case in our text, as I ask you to consider with me WHY JESUS WENT THROUGH SAMARIA. First, JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA TO SHOW HIS LOVE FOR A WAYWARD SOCIETY.John 4:9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.However unpopular they may be, Jesus still seeks sinners in love, regardless of their sex or gender; regardless of their social class or grouping; and regardless of their sin.Second, JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA TO SUPPLY LIFE TO A WICKED SINNER (Jn. 4:10). Maybe she told her girlfriends that she was "living it up," but she was actually DEAD (1 Tim. 5:6), dirty, and in a spiritual, personal DROUGHT. She need the LIVING WATER that only JESUS could give!Third, JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA TO SATISFY HIS OWN LONGING FOR WINNING SOULS. When the disciples returned from getting groceries, Jesus wasn't hungry. He told them "I have meat to eat that you know not of ... My meat is to do the will of him that sent me ..." (Jn. 4:31-34). Jesus loves souls (Jn. 15:13; Rom. 5:7-8); He looks for souls; and He leads souls to the Father.Fourth, JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA TO SHOW THE LABORERS THEIR WRONG SCHEDULE (Jn. 4:35). Like many Christians today, the disciples had the wrong schedule for lifting up their eyes, for looking on the fields, and for laboring in the fields. NOW is the time to go soul-winning!Last, JESUS WENT TO SAMARIA TO SEND A LADY AS A WILLING SOUL-WINNER (Jn. 4:39). She wasn't a "lady" in her past; she was apparently a wicked woman. But NOW she was CHANGED. She had a supernatural redirection of desire, because she had a supernatural revelation about her sin and the Savior, and she had supernatural results in giving her testimony! Amen!Aren't you glad that Jesus came by YOUR well one day? Let Him send YOU into the town to bring people to Him as this woman did!
