"...and the scripture cannot be broken." (John 10:35b)
The Word of God is a unified and perfect body of Truth. It cannot be broken, as Jesus reminds His audience. It cannot be properly taught or accepted in parts. It cannot be broken up in order to pit one verse against another. They all stand or fall together.
The same word “broken” is used in the book of Acts when a congregation “broke up” after a meeting (Acts 13:43). Some folks went their own way, while others followed Paul and Barnabas. We see that often in the book of Acts and in the Epistles as well. But Jesus says the Scripture is not like that at all. Not a single verse goes another way from the rest or teaches a doctrine differently. The Bible is a perfect whole, but it is only perfect when it is believed as a whole.
Every major cult, sect, soft-soaping, Michael row your boat ashore religion affirms or stresses one part of Scripture, while denying or ignoring the rest. This always produces a lop-sided theology with up and down, on again off again followers. It is only by taking a prayerful and careful with the Holy Spirit guiding study that we are able to have a well-rounded and accurate understanding of God’s message to us.
How do you read the Bible? How do you study the Bible? Do you pick favorite verses, or 'pet' texts in order to shape YOUR opinions of God's Word, or do you perform the student of God's work of systematic study comparing it with the rest in order to grow in grace and in the understanding of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?
Yes friends, the Scripture cannot be broken. Those who wrest the Scriptures by bending and twisting God’s Word to suit their personal beliefs, do so to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16).
