And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." (I Samuel 15:22)
Millions of people will be making New Year resolutions today, tonight, and tomorrow. They will vow to themselves, and others, to either start this thing or to stop that habit. That may be all well and good, but folks, no matter how you slice that cake, what the New Year holds for each of us will depend a great deal on what we hold onto from the Old Year. There will be bitter disappointments in the days ahead experienced by many when the New Year hopes they vowed start to clash with those Old Year habits they still want to play with.
The Bible puts the question to each of us in the above verse, "Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD?" Then, without any hesitation, the Bible answers its own question, "Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice."
Studying the Word of God every day, and then putting its precepts, its principles, and its promises, which are inspired by the Power of the Holy Spirit, will bring about our Lord's abiding peace, abundant joy, and the assured victory that comes through obeying. The Word of God alone holds for each of us the truths concerning our Fitness, our Finances, our Friendships, our Faith, and of course, our Future.
Friends, we don't need to promise some New Year's oaths. Rather, what we need to do is proceed with some New Year's obedience.
