Serving God in the Prime of Your Life
Eccl. 12:1 "Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, while the evil days come not nor the years draw nigh, when those shalt say, I have no pleasure in them."
Full of vim and vigor we should love the Lord and earnestly do his will in youth. Convictions may be established that is life-long. Character is developed and a life-long process of putting God's Word in our lives is before us.
Not many older people are happy if they don't know the Lord. The percentage of their accepting Christ goes way down as they grow older. They have nothing to help them cope with as the preacher said: "when the evil days come," and happiness is removed because of illness and deterioration. He describes the aging process in terms of a body wearing down in verses 2-6. Then he says to flesh turns to "dust and the spirit to answer to God who gave it.
The conclusion he says in v. 13 to "Fear God and keep his commandments." A healthy fear of God and His commandments is a nice idea and our duty. When this is embedded in our hearts, we have a lifetime of direction and wisdom ahead of us because we trust in the source of all wisdom and morality. May we learn from one who had been down the road and said, "this is the way you are to live?"
