The James Madison class ballistic missile submarine USS Sam Rayburn (SSBN-635) moored at Newport News, VA during the mid-1960s.
The hatches of her sixteen ballistic missile tubes are each decorated to look like a different billiard ball. Each of these hatches covered a silo that would have contained a Polaris A-3 ballistic missile and later, upon introduction, the more capable Poseidon.
