"And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept." (Genesis 33:4)
There are a great number of dramatic scenes in the Bible, and this is certainly one of them. During the past twenty years, Jacob lived in fear of Esau's death threat. Esau had grown and prospered and put behind him his anger over Jacob's conniving. Jacob expected a weapon of hate in Esau's hand, but instead he received a warm hug. Theirs was a historic sibling rivalry, but over time their individual successes had healed those wounds.
Now, God had answered Jacob's prayer for safety even before Jacob prayed. The fear that gave birth to worry all those years was all for naught. Jacob should have trusted the Lord and His promises from the very beginning. After all, he had the birthright, the blessing, and most of all, he had the Word of the Lord spoken to him at Bethel.
You know folks, we will face, or have already faced, something similar in our lives. Whether it is sibling rivalry, or rivalry in the office or the neighborhood, we will find that personal conflict is inevitable. Whether it is through no fault of our own, or partially reaping what we have sown, if we will cast all our cares on the Lord, obey His Word (as Jacob did in obeying God's command to return to his land), and trust in the promises of God found in His Word, we will realize that the Lord will help us face our fears and know that they were not all what we thought them to be. Many times, we will find there were really no strong foes at all, only our own silly fears.
Yes, there is great peace to be found in trusting the Lord and His Word. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us in these areas saying, "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Friends, most of our fears are completely unnecessary. Even when we do face difficulty, if we just lean on the Lord, He will use it for our good. Oh, why be bothered with worry and linger in doubt any longer when we can live with blessings and have that inward peace which comes by trusting in the Lord.
