"By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith." (Hebrews 11:7)
When reading Hebrews 11, we find that this great chapter is about those dear folks who lived by faith, not feelings. Therefore, it's profitable for you and me, whether we're long in the tooth or young in years, to live by faith.
In verse 7 here, we come upon this fella named Noah. You remember him, right? Noah trusted God, believed His warnings, and obeyed His commands. As a result, he was able to save his entire house from the destruction by the worldwide flood that came as God had promised. Notice that Noah was warned by God; but he was warned about things that he, himself, had thus far not even witnessed. As the verse tells us, He was "...being warned of God of things not seen as yet.”
Now Noah may not have understood everything God had said to him, but that didn't stop him. There he was out there every day preparing an Ark. The only blueprints he had for constructing that watercraft came from God, but that's all he needed.
I can almost see the hecklers stopping by while Noah kept working away gathering the needed materials. "Are you still working on that odd looking contraption, Noah," one would say. Another might add, "When is that stuff you called rain going start in?"
The jeers and the catcalls continued day after day, but Noah kept to the task and stayed on the job that God had called him to do. As a matter of fact, He kept at for some 120 years. And as Noah kept preparing the Ark, he kept preaching the same message to the same people day after day. We too have a message to preach to others, and God's message of salvation never changes: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
Do you know why Noah kept at the work at hand? Well, I'll tell you exactly why. It was: "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." (Genesis 6:8) Noah may not have understood back then what the grace of God was, but God knew, and God knew all about what kind of faith Noah had. That's why Noah's name is found in that Faith Chapter in Hebrews.
Like Noah, we found grace in the eyes of the Lord when we received Christ by faith. We also have been warned by God concerning things in the future we can't see. As we trust what God has told us in His Word, even though many are ridiculing it, or rejecting it, or trying to rewrite it; we are to keep right on walking, working, and witnessing by faith just like Noah did. Is it not better to trust in the grace of God than it is to put confidence in what others say? Well, I believe it because the Bible proclaims it saying, "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man." (Psalm 118:8)
Friends, those who have trusted Jesus Christ and have studied His Word, are well aware of the destruction and judgment that's coming upon this world. In these perilous days we live in, let's continue to live by faith in God, and having led our family and friends in obedience to God's Word and be determined in heart to warn others "of things not seen as yet."
