"And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.
And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink." (2 Samuel 16:1-2)
Remember Ziba? He was Saul's servant. David had appointed him and his family to be servants of Jonathan's son, the lame Mephibosheth. It isn't clear if Mephibosheth was planning his own rebellion to restore his Grandfather Saul's throne in the chaos that was taking place, or if Ziba was conniving to take back over the property of Saul, but the result was that David's young children and wives were provided animals to ride so that they could keep up.
Ziba also provided food to nourish them all on the journey.
What David could not prepare in the short notice and sudden flight; God provided from an unlikely source. Folks, we are assured by the many promises in Scripture that when we are in the middle of sorrowing situation, God will always be faithful and will meet our needs. The Word of God doesn't say He will supply our greed, but it promises to supply our need (Philippians 4:19).
All Israel was choosing sides back then out of their own personal interests. Would they side with Absolem, the usurper, or with God's man, David, the true king? The usurper promised them position and power, but he would not deliver. They would find true freedom and victory by following the king. Every day, yea, every moment, we are tempted to side with and be a partaker of what the devil suggests. He the ever-warring enemy of our Lord and His saints.
Friends, let's never forget that Satan doesn't PROMISE, he PLANS, and his plans are to befuddle our faith, break-up our families, and belittle our future. He can do nothing to deliver us from temptation, but he can do much to destroy our testimony. Praise God, our true King, the Lord Jesus, will deliver when delivery is needed and when our prayers make a beeline to that marvelous Throne of Grace.
