Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans is one of the greatest books of the Bible. It is, in my opinion, the greatest book of the Bible that expounds the need for, the necessity of, and the nature of salvation. Rom. 1-11 tells us about the PLAN for salvation, and Rom. 12-16 tell us about the PRODUCT of salvation. In this wonderful book Romans 6:23 is one of the greatest verses to be found. Think with me, if you will, on THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ROMANS 6:23.
Let me remind you of how the gospel of the grace of God is defined. Paul declared it clearly in:
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
With that in mind, let me say first that ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE (" For the wages of sin ..."). The gospel will never be the GOOD news to you unless you first learn from the Holy Ghost the BAD news about your sin. The gospel of 1 Cor. 15:3 says that Christ died for our SINS. Man's problem is a SIN problem. It is a common problem, for "all have sinned" (Rom. 3:23); it is a character problem (Ps. 39:5b); and it is a chosen problem (Eve was deceived, but even she CHOSE to listen to the serpent rather than to the Lord; Adam chose to die with his wife rather than to live with his God).
Second, ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PENALTY THAT WE OWE (" ... the wages of sin is DEATH"). The gospel says that Christ DIED for our sins. Sin has a PENALTY. Someone must DIE. Sin is described by death (read 1 Tim. 5:6); sin is destructive until death (Jas. 1:15); and sin is deserving of death, like wages that are earned. That penalty includes the SECOND death, which is eternal torment in the lake of fire (Rev. 20:11-15)!
Third, ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PRESENT THAT GOD OFFERS ("the gift of God is eternal life"). Eternal life, salvation, is God's gift (it is not the work of man, but the gift of God!); it is the greatest gift; and it is a gracious gift (Eph. 2:8-9), bestowed through the unmerited favor of God and received through faith.
And last, ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PRICE THAT HAS BEEN PAID ("through Jesus Christ our Lord"). As we read in 1 Cor. 15:3, "Christ died for our sins ..." He died voluntarily, He died vicariously (in our place, taking our sins upon Himself), and He died victoriously (securing salvation for every believer, sealed and proven by His powerful resurrection after His body spent three days and three nights in the grave!
Have you received the gift of God, eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord? If not, I urge you to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ today!
